Dad:

I was just going to write and say that I would be busy almost all Columbus Day, but I just looked on a calender [calendar] and found out that it comes on Wed. and not on Thurs. as I had thought. I have only one class on Thursday Wed. from 8 to 9 and will be free all the rest of the day except at meals. I'll be in my room after 9 and you can find me there. The log cabin is only open from 2:00 on so I guess you won't be able to eat lunch there. I don't know of any other place like that around here where you could eat lunch.

In reply to your questions: I am

taking senior English. Mr. Leonard is almost as dry as a bone but he isn't as dry as Lower. We haven't begun writing yet. So far we have been studying a composition book. I have 18 hours a week and 1 four o'clock class on all full recitation days. I have not played the piano since I came but I have joined the choir which will lead to the glee club if I am good enough. The food in unusally good and there is plenty of it. There is nothing special I would like to have mother make and bring up. Anything will do. The cookies were great. I haven't looked up the Ferguson fellow and I haven't tried the fudge nuts. So much for that.

I can't think of much I'd like I want you to bring up. I'd like a couple pairs of golf hose to wear with the knickers. I'll let you pick them out. Any decorations for the room would also be appreciated. Don't forget the things I mentioned in my last letter, I can't think what they were now. I just happened to think that I haven't any cuff links for that shirt yet. Get a cheap pair & bring them up.

Last Sunday there was a grand water carnival here in the dorm during evening study hours. I was out at the time but the effects were still evident when I came back.

Some of the playful students had been throwing water around and some of it leaked through into Heely's rooms so that Mrs. Heely had to put pans under the drippings. When Heely came home he was very unhappy. He made those who had done it clean it up the dorm and then gave them a fight talk down in his rooms.

I was changed from fullback to the forward line in soccer. The extra running around has stiffened me up a bit. Inter club games begin to-morrow. That's almost all for now. I [probably] [inserted above] won't write again before you come up unless I want something. I'll send my laundry & you can bring it up.

25 Johnson Hall Phillips Academy Andover, Mass Oct. 17 1932 " 18, 1932

Dear Dad & Mom:

There hasn't been much going on since I saw you but I guiess I can make a letter out of it. The Exeter game is November 12. Last Saturday the Yale Freshmen came up and gave Andover a good beating 25-0. It was a dandy game and not so one-sided as the score sounds. There were several spectacular runs, among them an 80 yard run for touchdown on an intercepted pass. Andover has some good plays and showed much more offensive strength this week than last week. One play that worked perfectly was a fake kick where a man

ran in front of the kicker and took the ball from him. The Harvard Fresh whom we tied 0-0 last week beat Exeter almost 13-7.

After you went left Wed. I went down to the Peabody House and found a piano to play on. It's in fair condition but I can't practice much because there are usually some fellows around and then there's an organ there which the students practice on. I'm going to see if I can get a piano on which I can practice by myself.

The physics test which I told you about came out good, in fact I got an 82 on it. I was marked on a basis of 85% so I didn't do so bad. We got our English themes

back to-day and I got a B – which also isn't so bad taking everything into consideration. We are going to have a test in history Thursday and I hope it comes out as well.

Our soccer team received a little setback yesterday when we were beaten by the Gauls 4-1. We all played as hard as we could in the second half but couldn't get more than one goal. The outlook doesn't look as good as it did before. Every other team except us has gotten at least one man who was out from the varsity. We have still got one or two weak spots.

I received the stockings, necktie,
