March 7th Socoety convened. After the prelim -inary exercises Homes declaimed, criticisms were read by Stocker and Smith, a com- -position by Winslow and original declaim ations by Salter and Treadwell. There was then a debateon the question, Is the in troduction of literature + science more favorable than the arts to the civiliza -tion od a barbarous people. Supported by Palmer on the affirmative and Stearns on the negative. The society decided in the negative. It was voted that disputes should hereafter be delivered without the aid of notes. H. Homes and McKean then desired a dis -mission from the society. Their request was not granted. The parts for next meeting were assign -ed and the society adjourned. Attest Jan [?] F.
