Our old friend Inspector Marlow has been appointed chief-inspector of the South western District. Much as we rejoice at such an instance of well-merited promotion, we are sure that all the inhabitants of this district will join with us in a species of selfish regret at the loss that we must sustain in being deprived of the services of so efficient an officer, and one who has so deservedly earned the respect and esteem of all who knew him.

Whilst on the subject of the Native Police force, we are happy to notice that the Government have [sic] at length provided the European members of that force with the means of appearing in a costume suitable to the position that they hold. Yesterday, in Herbert-street, we were struck with the appearance of two martially appointed figures. On closer inspection these turned out to be our friends Subinspectors Isely [sic] and Thompson [sic]. They looked splendid, there is no other word for it, but the truth compels us to own that they confessed it mighty hot.
