2 Sunday Feb. 25th Made the land at sundown supposed to be Mount Elliot, reefed topsails and hove to, lookout on the fore topsailyard all night reported breakers ahead three or four times each time wore ship; between 3 & 4 a.m. Feb 26th touched slightly aft, kept away before the wind; shortly after grounded aft and stuck, sea very smooth; hands at the pumps, water gaining, rudder unshipped, large leak in the run, Captain Stratman left at day break in the large whale-boat with six hands. at daylight land in sight to W.S.W.

the stern boat got adrift with three men, the second whale boat went to tow her up. two rafts were launched and dropped astern, between seven & eight a.m. water washing over port covering board; went to the maintop with beef, water and clothes.

the "Maria" filled and fell over to port, with about twenty feet of starboard quarter, and half of fore and main top masts above

we gave them a cheer which was answered and pulled for the land with fifteen men in the boat viz. 1. Pegus, 2 Dr. Tate, 3. King 4. Barclay. 5 Grey. 6. John Repean seaman 7. Hyman. 8. Wocroft. 9. Sefin. 10. Lane. 11. Ramsay 12 Broadbent 13 Hess. 14 Fox and 15 myself.

rain squalls from the south east all day landed at sundown, slept under the boat.

Tuesday Feb 27th the second whale boat with thirteen men. viz. 1 the mate. 2 Robinson. 3. Goble. 4. Dickman. 5 Arps 6. Marag. 7. Wright. 8. Powell. 9 Chalon. 10 Koenig 11 Krommelin .12 Misdell .13

landed at the same place, we were short of provisions. S.E. rain squalls all day. I put a signal on the top of hummock.

Wednesday Feb 28th I went with five men to the north in search of food & found some ginger. Rain at intervals from the S.E.

Thursday Feb 29th. the whale boat with six men pulled to the north

Friday March 1st. The whale boat returned and reported that we were on Hinchinbrook Island; I maintained that we were on Magnetic Island.

Saturday March 2nd. Launched the sternboat and pulled to the South. Sighted a red buoy and pulled to the N.W. the water nearly fresh, a channel about half a mile wide running to the N. & W. up which we pulled till dark & camped in the mangroves.

Sunday March 3rd started to the northward at day break and sighted Cardwell at about 10 a.m. and landed about one p.m.

This declaration was an order before me at the Court house Cardwell the fifth day of March 1872 [signed] Brinsley G. Sheridan P M.

This statement [records?] [?] in presence of the survivors of the *** Mr Goble states that there is an error in one the names in [?] Richard Good and not John Repean [signed] Brinsley G. Sheridan PM [signed] PF Selheim
