of Stamford forty years ago Mr. Mathews was
much struck with the fertility of the vicinity -
its english like appearance - its proximity to
the Falls of Niagara, all of which he foresaw would
cause the place to rise in the estimation of man and
sooner or later would draw within its neighbourhood
the society of a class of intelligent and educated
people among whom he might find the acquaintance
of an agreeable society that would tend to
sweeten the country life.

Leaving the backwoods to the settlement
and cultivation of his relations who are increasing
in numbers and prosperity daily causing the magnificent
forest trees to fall before their axe, thus
creating for their children an extensive and fertile
plain of rich cultivated land - This amiable
and philanthropic man retired to the spot where
he has resided for the last twenty years and has
seen his ideas respecting Stamford fully verified
the district of Niagara having become one
of the most favorite locations in Upper Canada
The number of travellers who are constantly
visiting the Falls from all parts of the world
has caused villages - towns - and hotels to
spring up for their accommodations in every
part

The house in which this venerable Welsh
Patriarch
resides is a wooden fabric entirely of
his own construction and consists of a saloon the
door opening immediately from the veranda this
