the smaller Islands they had suffered from fever
which had carried off several of their numbers.
They now found themselves as elated and cheerful
as if they had escaped from a pestilential
prison-house to a country so truly beautiful where
nature seemed to smile on all around, where
the daughters were fair, and refreshing breezes
are felt beneath trees ever green, in the stillest days
of summer and where every one seemed renovated
by the change.

The Channel of the Niagara from the
Falls to Lake Ontario a distance of fifteen miles
is very winding and so precipitous that the cliffs
in many places reach a height of four hundred
feet, the spot selected for the picnic is of that height
the elevation overhanging the stream. At this
particular point the river becomes so narrow and
pent up which causes the current to flow with
fearful rapidity when it becomes compressed
to a breadth not exceeding one hundred yards
and where the rocky bank takes a turn so sudden
and abrupt as to cause the rapid stream to fly off
at right angles from its former course which occasions
the whirlpool

Logs and trees are sometimes whirled
around for days together in its outer circles, which
in the centre they are drawn down perpendicularly
with great force, are soon shot up again at a distance
and thus thrown into the channel, by a counter current
and so pass down the river
