A extremely cold
day. Voltie and Wall went to Lindas
for the purpose of chopping wood this
a.m. Came home at 12 to dinner.
After dinner returned again to
the Island taking Charley Woodman,
Frank Woodman, Will Dixon, Ed Weaver,
Wells Bamford Jr and Wallace Niles,
7 of them, to saw and split
fire stove wood. When coming home at 3
p.m. they ran the ice boat upon a thin
piece of new ice formed the night before and as
the ice boat was being driven with great
speed before the wind the instant they boat
struck the new ice it broke, precipitating
the 7 of them beneath the ice cold water
but as they arose to the top, with
great presence of mind they managed to
save each other which is a miracle
indeed that some of there were not
