HIGH COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE JOHANNESBURG
May: 12: 1902
My dearest Nan
Many thanks for your last interesting letter. I had a good budget on Saturday – from Willie, Walter, Uncle Willie, Uncle Eben [Masterton], Cray-Henderson, Isabel Gathorne-Hardy, & Lady Leconsfield, & little Marshall of Rachan. From the last I received a full account of poor Sir Thomas Carmichael's financial reverses. He is going to leave Castlecraig and take a small house near Edinburgh. Eben wrote me a most amusing letter and I was very glad of

the Bird's photographs. The Gathorne- Hardys ask me to shoot with them at Glen Saddell in Cantire [Kintyre] this autumn. Alas! Alas!
H.E. came back from the Cape last week, rather tired & worried. He talked about sending me off to Rhodesia sometime this winter to act as a kind of special commissioner. I leave tomorrow for Natal & then by Friday night I hope to be in Port Elizabeth. I am greatly looking forward to seeing my parents & the Mhor. It will not be long now before the family is re-united,

believe me.
Lady Arthur Russell, Gilbert & their Flora & Diana are all up here. They came to lunch with us on Saturday. They are all immensely pleased with themselves & prepare to go on to China & home across Siberia. Did you ever hear of such sportsmen! They have let their London house to the Maharajah of Kuch-Behar for the Coronation.
I am sorry to hear from the Bird that my book is in a hideous cover. I have no luck in bindings. If I wrote a book of hymns, it would be published as a yellow-back.
I hope you have had a good time in Paris. Where do you propose to spend

the rest of your time till your parents come home? The Bird will also be an outcast, now that college is over.
I had a letter from the eldest son of Andrew Galloway, saying that his health had broken down & asking me to find him something to do out here. I get dozens of such letters weekly, and it is very difficult to know what to say.
With much love to all
Your affectionate brother
John
