H.E. [His Excellency] are still away. But we expect them back tomorrow night. They have had rather unsettled weather for their tour. I am hoping to be sent down to Ermelo in a few weeks - a country just like Scotland. The trek fever is very bad with me just now, & I long to be living in a tent again.

The last week has been a very heavy one, for I have been sitting on a Commission in Pretoria every day, and trying to get my Johannesburg work done after dinner & in the early morning. I am become a sort of Army and Navy Stores, so multifarious are my duties.
I read a rather amusing book in the train the other day -

'The Prophet of Berkeley Square" by Hichens, very nearly as funny as "The Londoners".
I hope you will all keep well and cheerful during the winter - particularly my old mother. Take great care of her.
