Lascelles Shortlands
My dear John,
I have just got your address from Wylie. I wrote to Cubbie for it, but got no answer: perhaps he never got it, as I wrote to Balliol.
I am staying at Ascot, where I came from Abinger, amusing myself with golf and riding, and am really getting set up again. On Saturday I am going up to St Mary's Loch in Selkirk for 10 days, then I am going to stay in Hertfordshire for a week or so with Brand of New College. I am not sure if you knew him.
Wylie has asked me to go to

Davos with him for Xmas, and I shall go if possible. It must be v. healthy, and I am quite keen on skating etc: also there are sure to be some Oxford people out there.
I have had rather a damnable experience, but I think I shall be quite right now, and up to hard work. If you do hear of anything I should like to go out to S. Africa very much indeed: it would quite make up for India. Williams got a place in the I.C.S. List all right, and I have had a very cheerful letter from him: he isn't going up to Oxford again.
If you have time to write, let me hear what kind of a time you are having. I don't expect you have much else but hard work. I wonder who you meet out there. Are you responsbile for any of the recent executions? I hope

they will put them off the war a bit.
I have not seen any Oxford people at all, but have heard from Wylie and D.V. When I come back from Scotland I shall go up to Oxford for a few days.
It seems hardly worth while sending this to S. Africa, but I have not been in a position to collect news.
Yrs ever
