HOTEL BELLVUE

BEACON STREET BEACON HILL BOSTON

Oct: 10: 24

My dearest wee Mother

Here we are back in Boston again. We got a big budget of letters yesterday, including one from Mr John. I am distressed to hear that you have had another abscess. (You & I seem to be sore afflicted with our blood.) Walter must have given John a very good time in London. Nan's letter about the little boys was delightful. Well, our face is set towards home now. We motor this week-end into New Hampshire where we are going to climb a mountain. Much of next week we are at Milton School [ST: Academy], where I open the War Memorial. Then we are

at Harvard for next week-end, and the following week go to Canada. We are both very well, but my face is still rather troublesome. The mental rest for both of us has been splendid, and, thanks to you & Nan, our mind has been at ease about the children.

New York was very delightful. We were tremendously fêted, & I rather wish we could have stayed longer. General Harbord's luncheon to me on Tuesday was very interesting - most of the American Generals and the partners in Pierpont Morgan's firm. I had to do a good deal of work at Reuter's office and to see all our colleagues of the Associated Press (who protected me nobly from interviewers) . On Tuesday night we went to a dinner party & then to a play.

All Wednesday morning we spent in the Pierpont Morgan library. Such an amazing treasure-house! I would give anything for Walter to see it. It made one gasp to open a little book & find it the MS of Scott's Journal, & another the MS of The Rose & The Ring, and to come on "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever" in Keat's handwriting. We lunched with Miss Bella Greene [ST: Bella Greene Librarian?] with a large [?] party, & then were taken for a drive. On Wednesday night the Harvard Club gave us a dinner. In America your health is proposed repeatedly & you have to make a speech every time. I made about 10 that night. Everybody sends me books & flowers, & we are heavy laden.

I see you are having an election this month

Young Scottie Hamilton won't have much chance in Peeblesshire with Alastair to work against him! I think the Tories should win some seats, but the Liberals ought to disappear.

I do hope these [dreams?] of yours won't come true & that you & Nan are both getting a rest. Susie is the most diligent propagandist of "Pink Sugar" [ST: by Anna Buchan]. She got a lot of copies from Doran, & has been sending them to people she thinks can push it.

Much love, my darling wee beauty

from

John
