You need not be a wit, or a cynic, or a
critic in order to contribute to the
enjoyment of those around you, and
to interest others, especially the youth
of the present day, in the careers and
habits of their predecessors.

Permit me to say how much I admired
your admirable tribute to Rosebery's
"Gifts and Graces" in your address to
the Scottish History Society.
