SLOANE 1543 .

112, EATON SQUARE , S.W. I .

October 28th 1935

My dear John,

We had no chance of seeing you off but I hope you understood. Anyhow our very best wishes have gone with you both. I am sure you will find it an immensely interesting and stimulating peace of work, in which your great gifts will have a real scope.

I am sending you with this a copy of my new book The Forward View. It is a somewhat ambitious attempt to put most of my political thinking into a single volume, and to base a practical policy, Imperial and domestic, on a coherent scheme of thought. When you have read it you will understand why I could not honestly support the Government over its League of Nations policy. Happily I think my efforts, even if they have precluded me from any prospect of office after the election, may have served to check the drift towards war. Things will amble on for some time now on the basis of economic sanctions, and only the event will show whether these really will have much effect.

As for the book itself I shall be very interested to hear from you what you think of it. If you did care to write a few lines about it such as my publishers could use I should be grateful. You know how difficult it is to get a book of that sort across to the ordinary reader and commendation from someone who everybody likes to read like yourself can help . At the same time don't bother about this. Read it for yourself.

Yours ever,

LSA

P.S. The book is being sent under separate cover.
