My dear Governor General:

I am indeed grateful to you for sending me a copy of the new edition of your address delivered at Milton Academy eleven years ago. I have been rereading it this morning with the feeling of how much its publication at this time is certain to enhance the good-will between the United States and Canada,

May I thank you as well for the inspiration of its pages. "Lonely fortitude" and "patience" are inseparable attributes of leadership, in however humble a manner it may be attempted; or however circumscribed its sphere. It brings an added sense of companionship to know how fully that is understood by Your Excellency.

May I avail myself of this note to extend to [left column:] you very hearty congratulations upon your address before the Canadian Authors' Association at Montreal.

I shall greatly treasure the little volume just received and the note which accompanied it.
