[JB had sent him special edition of proceedings in Westminster Hall at Silver Jubilee]

Laurier House, Ottawa.

27 - III - 36.

My dear Friend:

Hereafter, where our correspondence is personal, I think I ought to give you the name which is now yours, carrying into it all that is so precious in the one that it

"Can ne'er express, Yet cannot all conceal."

As a bridge from this one name to the other, I am continuing for the moment to use the word which is equally applicable to both.

I wish it were as easy to find the word which could begin to express my thanks for the truly exquisite and exceedingly rare gift which you have sent to me. With its associations what they are, I do not see how you could have brought yourself to part with it. Assuredly, I would not have permitted you so to do, were it not that by inscribing it as you have, you have placed it, for all time, so completely beyond your own possession.

I can only thank you for

what will ever be to me a part of yourself, as well as a part of the history of our times in the making and recording of which you have so largely shared.

Someday I hope there will be at Kingsmere a room which will be worthy of according a place to so bright a treasure. Just now, and for some time to come, it will be a part of Laurier House.

With heartfelt gratitude

Believe me, in truest friendship,

Yours very sincerely,

W.L. Mackenzie King.

His Excellency, the Rt Honble Lord Tweedsmuir G.C.M.G. C.H. etc
