Queen's College 6th October 1858 Which day the Senatus met and was duly constituted with prayer by the Principal. Sederunt The Revd Dr Cook Principal Professors Williamson, George, Mowat and Weir. The Minutes of former meeting were read and approved.
Dr. Lawson laid on the table an extract from the minutes of Trustees of Queen's College, of his appointment as Professor of Chemistry and Natural History, authorizing him at the same time to take his seat in the Senatus as a member of the Faculty of Arts.
It was proposed by Dr. Cook and unanimously

agreed to that the degree of Doctor in Divinity be conferred on The Reverend James Crichton Muir of Georgetown Canada East. It was likewise proposed by Dr. George and unanimously agreed to that the same honor be conferred on The Reverend Alexander McGillivray of McLennan's Mountain, Pictou, Nova Scotia.
The Senatus agreed to call the attention of the Trustees to the present State of the College Library, and to represent to them the urgent necessity that exists for a liberal grant to purchase additional books. Dr. Lawson promised to write to Edinburgh for Catalogues of books, from which selections might be made for the Library.
After some discussion the following Curriculum was agreed to — First Year's Students three hours Classics one hour Mathematics. Second year's Students, one hour Classics, two hours Mathematics one hour Natural History. Third year's Students one hour Classics, one hour Mathematics two hours Mental and Moral Philosophy and Logic per day
In regard to Dr. Lawson's classes the Senatus enjoin students of the second year in Arts to attend the lectures on Natural History, and strongly recommend students of the third year to attend the Chemistry or Natural History Class.—
An Extract Minute of the Synod in reference to William Danach was laid before the Senatus, allowing them to prescribe such a course of study for him, as in the circumstances they deemed best. The Senatus

agreed that for this session, he should attend the Junior Greek and Latin Classes and the Theological Classes.— In consideration of his age the Senatus allowed John Barr a dispensation from further attendance on the Mathematical classes.—
After Examination on the subjects prescribed the Senatus agreed to confer the degree ofB.A. on William Craig Kingston C.W.
The Secretary stated that as directed he had purchased the Imperial Dictionary and the Imperial Gazeteer for the College Library, for which he paid £11-18/, that he had paid Dr Williamson £10 for the purchase of books, when he went to New York, and that these sums deducted from the £22-10/ in his possession at the close of last Session as stated in the lasrt Minute thereof, left a balance of one Pound in his hands at present.

A letter was laid before the Senatus from John Paton Esquire intimating his intention of giving to the Bursary Fund $100 per annum —

being the half of his salary as secretary to the Trustees. The Secretary was directed to convey to Mr Paton the thanks of the Senatus for his liberal grant.
It was agreed that in future students should be furnished with tickets of admission to their respective classes, previously to matriculation. It was stated by the Secretary that 61 Students had matriculated in Arts and Divinity, of whom six had not paid their matriculation Fee— theat the matriculation Fees for the session amounted to $220, which together with the balance of $4 in hand since last year leave $224 at the disposal of the Senatus for the Library.
It was arranged that the Examinations for degrees should be held on the following days viz in Classics on Saturday the 23rd Current. In Mathematics on Monday the 25th, And in Mental and Moral Philosophy and Logic on Tuesday the 26th, to commence each day at 10 O'Clock A.M. with the Oral Examinations, that the written papers in the respective classes be given out in the afternoons of the above mentioned days, and that the public Exhibitions and closing Exercises of the Session take place on Thursday the 28th Current beginning at 9 O'Clock A.M.

John Goodwill, Alexander Hunter, James Carmichael, Andrew Watson, and Daniel McDonald were represented as being in very needy circumstances. The Bursary Fund by the previous demands upon it, being already overdrawn, it was agreed that the Principal should apply to the Trustees to advance $200 in the meantime to meet the present wants of the above named Students.
The Secretary stated thatthere were now $224 in his hands at the disposal of the Senatus for the purchase of books for the Library. Professors Lawson and Weir were appointed a Committee for the purchase of books, and to take other steps for the better arranging, managing and increase of the College Library.
After careful and joint views of the Oral and Written Examinations, it was agreed to confer the degree of Bachelor of Arts on, John Agnew, Kingston C.W. William Bennington Curran, Kingston C.W. Alexander Benson, Niagara C.W. James McCaul, Kingston C.W. Herbert Stone McDonald, Gananoque C.W. Duncan McDonald, Pictou Nova Scotia John Kerr McMorine, Ramsay C.W. Findlay Ferguson McNab, Smith's Falls C.W. Walter Ross, Pictou, Nova Scotia James Alexander Somerville, Kingston C.W. And the degree of Doctor of Medicine on Francis W, Bird, Belleville C.W. Arthur R. Boyle, St Catherines C.W.
