Queen's University, October 13th 1877

The Senate met and was constituted.

Sederunt the Vice Principal Prof. Williamson, Professors Mowat, Mackerras, Dupuis, Ferguson, and Watson.

The following programme of the matriculation and pass examinations which had been agreed upon at an informal meeting of Professors held September 26th was approved of:

It was found that the following freshmen named in the order of merit had passed the matriculation examination in Arts viz

It was found that the Prize nominations had been gained as follows:

[margin] Mr. Gallaher's application for B.A. [/margin]

The Secretary intimated that the Rev. John Gallaher, Pittsburgh, an alumnus of Magee College Ireland, was desirous of obtaining from this University the degree of B.A. The Vice Principal was requested to examine Mr. Gallaher's College certificates and report to next meeting.

[margin] application from Mrssrs Acheson & Cochrane for B.D. [/margin]

Letters were read from the Rev. Stuart Acheson, Cookstown an alumnus of Knox College, Toronto, and the Rev. J.J. Cochrane, of Thornton an alumnus of the Presbyterian College Montreal inquiring if they could be admitted to an examination in the subjects prescribed to candidates for the degree of B.A. with the view of their obtaining that degree. The Secretary was instructed to inform them that they can be admitted to the said examination if they can present certificates of having attended classes in the prescribed subjects in same recognized College, but not other

[margin] application of Princeton graduate for B.D. [/margin]

A letter was read from Wm. N. Chambers a graduate of Princeton College N.J. intimating that he and two or three other graduates now attending Princeton Theological Seminary were desirous of becoming candidates for the degree of B.D. in this university, but that the time fixed for the examination did not suit them and inquiring whether the time could be altered, or the examination papers entrusted to one of the Princeton Professors, and the examination held under his supervision. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Chambers that the time and place fixed for the examiniation cannot be altered.

[margin] protest against awarding of Watkins scholarship [/margin]

There was read a Protest from H.H.T. Shibley against the awarding of the Watkins Scholarship to H.C. Fowler on the alleged ground of the said Fowler having availed himself of forbidden helps during the examination. The Secretary was instructed to summon Shibley to appear before the Senate on Monday next at 9 o'clock A.M. with a as he can adduce in support of his allegation.

The Senate met and was constituted.

Sederunt the Vice Principal Dr. Williamson, Professors Mowat, Mackerras, Dupuis, Ferguson and Watson.

The minutes of the last meeting held Oct. 13th were read and after being amended were approved.

[margin] Mr. Gallaher's application for B.A. [/margin]

The Senate took up again Mr. Gallaher's application and having heard the Vice Principal's report upon his College certificates resolved.

[margin] Oct. 15. 1877 [/margin]

that he be admitted ad eundem statum in all those subjects in which he passed at Magee College, and that he be required to be examined in the subjects hwich he did not study and pass in at Magee College, viz. chemistry and history or natural science.

[margin] Watkins scholarship awarded to Shibley [/margin]

H.H.T. Shibley appeared and reiterated the charge contained in his Protest. H.C. Fowler was then called in and denied that he had profited in any way by forbidden helps during the examination for the Watkins scholarship, but confessed that he had looked into a glossary on one of the Greek subjects, and had looked over the papers of one of the other candidates. Whereupon the Senate resolved that H.C. Fowler has forfeited the Watkins scholarship and that H.H.T. Shibley who obtained the next highest number of marks is entitled to it.

[margin] petition for changes in German & Literature hours refused [/margin]

There was read a Petition from twelve freshmen for a transposition of the hours of two of the classes viz. German and Rhetoric and English literature. The Senate declined making the transposition asked for, having ascertained that it would be objected to by certain students who have chosen one or other of the above classes in the expectation that the hours specified in the Calendar would be adhered to.

[margin] Oct. 18. 1877 [/margin]

E. D'Argent the Senate agreed to allow him to attend the class of Natural Science this session.

[margin] petition from Eliott & Daly [/margin]

There was read a Peititon from Messrs. Ellliott and Daly in regard to the rearrangement of the clsses of senior mathematics and logic and metaphysics. The Senate declined making the change desired by the Petitioners.

[margin] petition from Alex. McLean [/margin]

There was read a Petition from Alexander McLean for a supplementary examination in metaphysics for the reason that he had lost a part of the time appointed for the examination through his mistaking the hour of the afternoon sederunt. The Senate declined granting Mr. McLean's request.

[margin] meeting to elect curators of reading room [/margin]

The Senate appointed a meeting of the students to be held in the Classical room on Monday 22d inst. at 4 o'clock P.M. for the purpose of electing Curators of the Reading Room - the names of the Curators elected to be communicated by the Secretary of the meeting to the Secretary of the Senate.

The minutes of the last meeting held 18th ult. were read and approved.

[margin] EA Sturman applies for ad eundem degree [/margin]

There was read an application from E.A. Sturman of London, England, Master of Arts of Richmond College, Ohio for an ad eundem degree. The Senate resolved that they could not grant the application without more satisfactory than they at present profess as to the standing of Richmond College and the curriculum
