The Board listened to his desire with profound regret,
and unanimously requested him to withdraw the
resignation. One of the earliest graduates of Queen's, and a
warm friend from the first, "now the assistance of his
counsel and experience was more needed than ever.
At that time of transition in the affairs of the University,
with various and critical questions pending she could ill
afford the loss of his trained judgment, and experience,
and so would respectfully urge him, if his health and
comfort at all permitted, not to press his resignation
until some of the more difficult problems on hand were
out of the way."

The report of the Finance and Estates Committee was then
taken up. It began with an expression of regret that
there was a serious deficit for the year, $4,755.99,
accounted for by an uncontrollable increase in expenditure
on salary account, and a shrinkage in some sources of
revenue. With a few exceptional items, the increases
were permanent.

The expense incurred at the installation of Principal Gordon,
the past autumn, was comparatively light for so interesting
and impressive an occasion, only $612.09. The day was one
