the Physics Chair became vacant, and Mr. Marshall
Professer Emeritus.

As reported in previous pages of this Book, so now, the
University was extending in every department, to the
great satisfaction, if also the great concern, of the
authorities. How to increase the teaching force, and how
to increase the revenue was a question that would not
down. But the staff must be manned as fully as
possible, and the best instruction provided. The class
in Botany, a subject not greatly stressed in the past,
had been mounting up and up and the Professor, the
accomplished and devoted Dr. Fowler, was overworked,
and an assistant must be secured. Happily the choice
fell on WJ MacClement MA a graduate of Queens, and
at the time Professor of Chemisty in the Armour Institute
Chicago. On the retirement of Professor Fowler, through
infirmity, his mantle fell on his competent assistant.

In the Department of Hebrew, English, Classics and
Philosophy, young men like Wallace, McConnachie,
McDougall, Calhoun and Shelton were doing excellent
work as Fellows , and giving promise of highly valuable
service in days to come.

In Theology, men like Campbell. Carmicheal, Milligan,
Mackinnon, Gray and others, were giving, from time
to time, lectures of instructive interest to the students
and for which Board and Senate voted their thanks and
praise.
