At the same time, it was evident to the officers of the univeresity that the general assembly should more clearly implement its cordial promise, and assist Mr Laird, in a more active manner, in pushing the convass, if the half-million was to be secured, and it was decided to memorialize the approaching assembly to this effect. In accepting the resignation of Professor Ferguson and Fowler, the frustees expressed their great appreciation of their long and faithful service, of their goal and ability in conducting their work, and of their constant enthusiasm in advancing the general interest of the University.
Further, the frustees expressed their satisfaction that through the kindness of Mr Andrew Carnegie a modest retiring allowance for life was secured to them. And each was appointed Professor Emeritus in the branch of learning which he has served so long and well.
