James Douglas of New York, one of the early graduates of Queen's, was elected a Trustee by the Council. [The?] Doctor turned out to be a wise Councillor in all University matters, and, as the sequel will show, one of the [most?] generous and outstanding benefactors the University has ever had. And sometimes losses come. (?er) the Teaching Staff suffered a serious one in [the?] departure of Prof. J.R. Glover, m.a., of the Latin Chair [?] similar work in his own Alma Mater, the University [of?] [Ca]mbridge. Here his high character and extensive (?)accurate scholarship were much valued, and his [resig]nation was the cause of deep regret to the Board [?] Staff. The high expectations of his coming [?]tion in many eminent services have been more [?] [a]mply realized, and at the date of this writing [?]

Prof. Glover is one of the truly great leaders of [?ht], one of the most trusted examplars of personal (m)oral worth amongst the English speaking peoples. [?]is not forgottton Queen's, and so often as he re-visits he is sure of a most cordial welcome, and the [?] of the Board will fully bear this out. [?] readjustment in working details between the (Unive)rsity and the School of Mining was given [?]ed attention, and, as was expected, to the

advantage of both. Happily this was facilitated by a larger grant per annum from the Government of the Province.

Additions were made to the Staff in Moderns, English and Philosophy. Classes were growing larger, year by year, and more instructors were imperatively needed. Professor Dyde was appointed Lecturer in Moderns, Mr. John Marshall, M. A., was made assistant Professor in English, and the Rev. John Sharp, M.A., tutor in English and Philosophy. All three were experienced teachers, and highly trained in the work required of them. Prof. John Watson was appointed Vice-Principal in the room of Prof. Williamson, deceased. In the matter of the Temporalities Fund, already referred to in this Book, it was learned that the University would probably receive as its last payment from that Fund, one half of the usual half yearly allowance the following June. The Board was thankful for the long continued assistance rendered by said Fund, and made a handsome contribution towards a Testimonial to Mr. Alex Macpherson, long Chairman of the Temporalities Board.

On the question of proposed changes in the Charter, the name for the New Theological College came up for discussion, and the matter was remitted to a

committee which would report at a later stage. In this [connection?] it was resolved that the Degree-conferring [illegible] in all Faculties should be vested in the University. [illegible] the Finance and Estates Committee presented its report, a surprise, that yielded the Board great satisfaction, awaited it: there was a surplus of Revenue over Expenditure of $11.49 for the year. Fees rose over [illegible] of the preceding year by $2,500. Some further expenditure was authorized for faithful service in certain Departments, and also for oimprovements in the College grounds. And meantime because of the expense involved, no action was taken in extending the Heating Plant, although much needed both by the University and the School of Mining. The Finance and Estates Committee would think it over, and put its [illegible] on $31,000 if it could, the amount estimated for said plant. At an adjourned meeting of the Board [illegible] October, attention was drawn to the fact, that in the official programme for the laying of the Cornerstone of the New Arts Building - the gift of the City of Kingston, there was no place given to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York who were about to visit the city. The matter was left in the hands of the Chancellor who would, the Board felt sure, be able to correct the unintentional ommission.

As the record later on will show, the Chancellor was quite successful in the interesting task committed to him, and the corner stone was "well and truly laid" by their Royal Highnesses, 15th Oct, 1901. More than that, the Prince and Princess kindly visited the Principal who was lying ill in the General Hospital, expressing their warm sympathy with him, in his suffering, and conferring upon him, by command of the King, the honour of the Companionship of St. Michael and St. George. The Principal dutifully remarked that when health was better he hoped to be able to return their gracious call.

The Board and Staff and all the friends of Queen's were much concerned about the state of the Principal's health, and steps were taken to relieve him of his lectures in the Theological Faculty. His son, Mr. W. L. Grant (later Principal Grant of Upper Canada College) was appointed secretary to his father during his illness. Nothing was omitted by the Authorities and Staff to show the Principal their unqualified admiration of him, both as man and Principal and their solicitude from his restoration to health and strength. Nor were the students less concerned about the health of their devoted friend "Geordie".

During those years, Departments that used to be manned single-handed, were divided. The student tide was rising rapidly, and the Staff must be increased to meet the requirements of growing classes and additional studies.
