The prospects of the College were at the beginning of
the Session in the highest degree discouraging. The greatest
part of its revenues was gone, and many were prevented from
sending their sons to study in its halls by fears as to its condition
for the future. The efforts to obtain a renewal of the Parliament-
ary grant were made in vain. Experience has since shown, that
it was in reality well, and for the best interests of the University,
that they were so. The Institution was thus kept from
resting on so uncertain and shifting a foundation for its
support and from dependence on political parties, while
at the same time the liberal aid of its friends, the flow of
which had been hitherto in a great measure checked by reliance
on Government help, was called forth, and a wider and
most beneficial sympathy created in the welfare of the
