seat of learning which their fathers had founded, and in the
prosperity of which they themselves, having given of their means to
its maintenance, and advancement, could not fail to take a
deeper interest. It was now, however, impossible for the College,
with its greatly depleted resources, to continue as before, unless
steps were immediately taken to find, if possible, a solution of
the difficulties in which it was involved. The board of Trustees,
therefore, on 16th December 1868, resolved without delay to obtain
the advice of the Synod on the Subject, to request its Moderator to
summon a pro re nata meeting of its members for the considera-
tion of the whole matter, and to suggest to him, that the meeting
be held in St. Andrew's Church Kingston on Wednesday, the
Sixth day of January following. On that day accordingly, the
Synod met, and the following statement was laid before them
by the Trustess:-

"To the Revd the Synod of the Presbyterian Church
of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland
called to meet pro re nata, in Saint Andrew's
Church, Kingston, on the 6th day of January 1869
"The Trustees of Queen's College respectfully repre-
sent, -That in their opinion there is no prospect of obtain-
ing in future the Legislative grant by which the authorities
