the College should continue its functions on terms and conditions
like to those which had previously existed. This
change in the relations of the College however rendered necessary
on application to the Legislature of the Province for a corresponding
change in the provisions of the Charter, and the Act 38
Vic. Cap. 76 was accordingly passed for that purpose. Advantage
was also taken of this application to the Legislature
to secure the embodiment in the Act of additional powers and
privileges, with the view of increasing the efficiency, and extending
the usefulness of the College, in terms of the recommendations
of a Committee of the Trustees approved of by the Board.
Among other provisions of the Act power was given for the
Election of a Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Vice Principal,
a "University Council" was instituted, consisting of the
Chancellor, and members of the Board of Trustees, and Senate
together with an equal number of graduates, or alumni, and
the functions of this new and important body were defined.
