1895-96

The number of the students registered in
the different faculties for this year was 564 against 533 in
the previous year, and 456 in 1895. 'See Queen's Quarterly.
July 1896.)

The history of Queen's for 1895-96 was a
sorrowful one. Many times during the winter she was
called on to experience the loss of valued friends, either by
death or removal.

On the 26th of September, the much
loved and venerated Vice-Principal Mr Williamson, passed
away after fifty-three years of continuous active service.

It is impossible to overestimate the influence which he
had had in the college, or the deep affection felt for him
by all classes connected with Queen's almost since her
foundation, he had steadfastly and consistently worked
for her interests and those of successive generations of
students as they came under his care. The breadth of
his learning and scholarship had been especially valuable
to Queen's in the days of her struggles with poverty and
slender equipment, when he had by turns filled almost every
chair. He was appointed vice-principal of the University
in 1876. In 1882, having completed a service of
forty years, he proposed to resign his professorship. The
Trustees, however, would not consent to/ part with
him, but relieved him of the teaching of Physics.
