a course of free public Lectures on Astronomical subjects
was delivered by the Principal to large audiences in the City
Hall, besides familiar lectures given by the Director, Professor
Williamson, in the Observatory itself. A Reflecting Telescope,
with stand, by the celebrated Mr. Short, with a speculum
of 7 1/2 inches diameter, was presented by the Principal to the
Institution.

The Directors of the Kingston Grammar School had
been for some time desirous of amalgamation of that Institution
with the Preparatory School belonging to the College, and had
endeavoured to obtain the consent of the Board of Trustees
to accede to their views. The usefulness of the Grammar School
had sunk to a very low ebb notwithstanding every effort
to maintain it, and its Scholars were very few in number.
In these circumstances a letter was recieved by the Board from
Sir Henry Smith, Secretary to the County Grammar School on the
subject of amalgamation. The Trustees of the College agreed to take
the matter into consideration, and appointed a Committee to
obtain from the Faculty of Arts their views as to the proposed
union, and report as to the suitableness, in their opinion, of
the new Board of County Grammar School Trustees
for its harmonious working. On 22nd February 1862, the
