and agreed in dsiapproving of the scheme of University
Federation, submitted by the Minister of Education as far
as Queen's was concerned.

On the 13th of January 1885, a special meeting of the Board of
Trustees was held for further and official cnosideration of the
scheme of Univerfsity Federation submitted by the Minister of
Education. Letters were read from Rev Dr Cook, Quebec, Ex-Principal
and Chancellor, Rev Jas Barclay St Pauls Church Montreal,
Hon Geo. A. Kirkpatrick, Hon Alex Morris, Rev Dr Moore, Dr Grant,
and Mr Allan Gilmour of Ottawa, Rev Dr Neil of Seymour and
others, giving their views on the question, all being unanimous in their
opinion that the scheme was not favourable to Queen's and presenting
their views why Queen's should not enter the proposed Confederation.

The Principal explained the views he had urged at the
different Conferences; and also why other institutions would be
likely to embrace the scheme etc. He also stated that there were
different courses open.

1st To accept the principle of Confederation and ask for compensation
in order to erect suitable buildings in Toronto as the scheme implied
and removal to that City. 2nd To decide against the scheme.
3rd In case we decided against the scheme, to consider how we could
best hold our own against the Confederacy that would probably
be formed in Toronto. All the Trustees then gave their
views, and the views of the Graduates and Friends of
Queen's in their different Localities. After a
good deal of discussion it was moved by Mr.
