students of Queen's, in an interesting address, briefly reviewed
the events of the past fifty years. On Tuesday
evening an At Home was given in Convocation Hall
under the auspices of the Alma Mater Society and on
Wednesday the special functions in honour of the occasion
took place. A Thanksgiving service was held at 11.30 A.M.
in Convocation Hall at which, among other distinguished
guests, were present His Excellency Lord Stanley of Preston,
the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Sir A. Campbell and
the Premier, Sir John A Macdonald. The Thanksgiving
sermon was preached by the Rev John Mackie
of St Andrew's Kirk, Kingston, the other city clergy
taking parts of the service. At the afternoon convocation
representatives were present from many of the sister institutions
and universities in the Dominion, and telegrams
and letters of cordial sympathy and congratulation were
received from those unavoidably absent. Among those
present on this occasion were the Chancellor, the Principal,
the Vice Principal, the Senate, Lord Stanley of Preston,
Governor General of Canada, Sir John A Macdonald, Hon
GW Ross, Chancellor McVicar of McMaster University,
the Bishop of Ontario and many others. The honorary
degree of L.L.D. was conferred on Lord Stanley, who
was enthusiastically welcomed and who made a fitting
reply. Addresses of a strongly reminiscent
character were given by Chancellor Fleming,
