believe that many will be glad to take part in a
movement to perpetuate, by a monument more enduring
than granite and marble, the name and work of a
great Canadian and Imperial Statesman, who was
largely identified with the building of the Dominion
and Empire.

Subscriptions came in during the winter, with a
promptness that left no doubt as to the success of the
undertaking, and encouraged the promotions of it to
collect for an adequate endowment for the Chair of
Mental Philosophy. It was resolved at the
Annual meeting of Trustees that the Chair of Political
Science held by Professor Shortt should in future
be known as the Sir John A. Macdonald Chair of
Political and Economic Science, and that Professor
Shortt's salary should be increased to $2000
per annun, as the subscriptions promised
