would become more and more like the institution
after which it was modelled, Edinburgh University,
which, he reminded them, had been founded by
the Town Council, and therefore was long known
simply as "the town's College;" the Principal said: -
"We were founded by the church to assert freedom,
and now we are being founded anew by the city to
show the excellent relations which exist between the
university and the city." The medical faculty he continued,
had decided to extend its building, and add
to its equipment, and the trustees would, at the
request of the University Council, consider to what
extent or in what way they could best help the
faculty to carry out the faculty's decision.

The response of the Government to the request
of the governors of the School of Mining
had also been generous and timely. Not only
