The Domesday Book Of Queen's University (Volume 1) 1839-1900 p.249-1193

ReadAboutContentsHelp
The Domesday Book of Queen's University was established by Queen's Trustees in 1887, at the suggestion of Chancellor Sanford Fleming, to record the names of the university's benefactors and the main events in its history, which were to be written into the book every year. The book was kept up to date by Professor James Williamson and his successors, Librarian Lois Saunders and Professor Malcolm MacGillivray, until 1924, by which time the innovation of annual Principal's Reports (begun in 1916) rendered it unnecessary. The book takes its name from the original Domesday Book, a survey of England taken by William the Conqueror in 1086. The items to be described are the two handwritten volumes of the Book.

For the further securing of the above object, the Chairman was authorized to sign an Indenture as drafter by Oliver Mowat Esq. of Toronto, and recorded in full in the Minutes of the Executive Committee of date 19th, December 1856.

From the time of the resignation by Dr. Machar in 1853 of the office of permanent Principal, which the onerous duties of his pastoral charge rendered him unwilling to retain, efforts had been made to secure a suitable successor for that important position, Dr. George having agreed in the meantime to act as Vice Principal. Endeavours, however having failed to obtain from the Church of Scotland one possessed of the necessary qualifications for the Head of the Institution, and Dr. George having in Septr 1887 resigned the office of Vice Principal, together with that of Trustee, the Board, strongly convinced of the urgent necessity of an immediate appointment for the good of the College and Church, and assured from ample testimony,
