Townsville February 19th 1889.
FROM Prisoner Henry L. Hallam
For remission of sentence
Passed by
To the Honorable The Colonial Secretary. Brisbane.
Sir
I humbly [respectfully?] beg to tender you this petition for remission of sentence or probation, under the following circumstances & pray that it may receive your kind ! [-avorable?] consideration
I was arrested in Hughenden on the 9th May las[t] for having passed a valueless cheque for £10- and sentenced by His Honor Judge Nöel to twelve months imprisonmnet with hard labor on the 1st August last. I have therefore been incarcerated nearly ten months.
I have always had a good, respectable, and responsible position, but unfortunately felt, without the least intention of fraud, there being many extenuating circumstances in connection with the case.
I am sincerely penitent & sorry for my offence (which I may sate is my first ) ; and being a Widower with an only daughter to care for, I humbly crave that your Honor will grant me your clemency in granting this my humble prayer & petition
I am Honorable Sir Your Humble & Obedeient Servant.
