much labour and considerable
calculation to compile, I nevertheless
believe it will be found a sound basis
from which a more correct system may
be adopted at some of the hatcheries; and
whereby the moneys provided for processing
parent fish, may be more judiciously
expended with the certainty of securing
a more satisfactory supply of eggs.

The contrast between the cost of
parent fish and eggs as shown in this
schedule is conclusive as to the necessity
of a more efficient method being applied
to some of the hatcheries in the future.
No. 1 Fraser River Hatchery, although […] Fraser River B.C
given in the table, should not be put in
comparison with the Atlantic salmon
hatcheries Nos 2 to 9 inclusive; on account
of the immense numbers of fish and the
easy means of catching them in the Fraser
River. But the comparisons are to
be made only with regard to the work
in the Atlantic rivers where the difference
between [91/2?] and $5.65 per [wt?] exists in
the cost of eggs of the “Salmo salar.”

In explanation of the very low
cost of eggs per [wt?] at No 4 Dunk River, [...] Dunk River
[viz?] [9 1/3?] it must be said that it is the
only establishment built after the plan
originally adopted at the [primary?]

[hatcheries?] at Newcastle Ontario by
which the salmon are on their passage
up stream enticed into a reception
house where they become entrapped and
are safely kept till ripe for spawning
then manipulated and set at liberty
again; Thus no expense is incurred in
netting or carrying or guarding the
parent fish or ova as the reception house
or retaining pond is constructed immediately
alongside the hatchery.
No. 9 Tadoussac Hatchery
Tadoussac [...] stands[next?] for cheapness, being [only?]
27 per [thousand?] ova. - Here a convenient pen,
a saltwater reservoir, stands just
alongside the hatchery where the salmon
are impounded from June till spawning
time. The parent fish are taken in nets
a short distance from the nursery and
towed into the pen; the nets are managed
by employees of the hatchery.

Nos 6 & 8, Miramichi and
Gaspe; stand next as to cost of eggs
Miramichi [...] per [thousand?] each being [46?]. Miramichi has
a large reservoir alongside the hatchery
but instead of the parent fish being [received?]
in early summer they are netted at
the "close time" and [?] down river
to the reservoir. Whilst the cost of eggs
is not great, it is to my mind [over?]
