7th Oct Sunday we proceeded along side of Steam collier by Signal & took in 80 tons of Coal. after coaling was finished the admiral made the following Signal (Coaling well executed) which we all felt a great compliment a ship about the same tonnage the day before took 10 hours to take in 60 tons we managed to get ours in, in 4 hours. the difference in time for coaling the Both Ships was no doubt the course for the Admirals signal 9th Left for Shan hai Ruau with mails & despatches arriving the next day on the 10th Left for Shan huang tau with a commission Officers from all Ships. 1 German Admiral 2 Russian Officers 1 French --2 [illegible] the Captains of the Goliath & Dido. distance about 12 Miles returning to Shan hai Ruau in the evening on the 13th we left Shan hai Ruau for Neu chuang distance about 120 Miles the most northmost port in China on arrival we found the place & Railways in Charge of the Russians the Railways I was informed was constructed by British Captail their is a great trade in this place I seen as many as 4 to 500 Junks now mostly laid up the Russian Soldiers have & are commiting most grave acts of Violence here, demanding money & articles and if it is not forthcoming a Bayonet is run through them. without the slightest interference from the Russian authorities my [illegible] is the the chinese are far more [illegible] than the Russian

Cossacks. I am very proud to say that two of the most formost men that took part in the attack made by the Boxers in Neu chuang [of] was 2 South australians [illegible] Mr Miller the post master & Mr [fau?] [the] one of the pilots Mr Miller is a native of Mount Barker & [fau?] was [illegible] no the Old Red line Hotel Rundle street the Boxers attacked the place on the date I have forgotton the Europeians which number about 80 having formed themselves into a Volunteer Corps was Called out Mr Miller informed me that they erected a Barracade one of the Volunteers a Customs officer (a Dane) went & [illegible] the Chief of the Boxers but he being a most powerfull man was overpowered [illegible] & it would have faired Badly for him & the 80 Europeans had it not being for a party of Blue Jackets (Russians) them going on Board & hearing the report of firearms [illegible] Back. & [illegible] the aid of the Volunteers defeated the Boxers & shot the chief Miller informed me that he shot at least 3 of them & have sent [of] one of the Jackets worn by the Boxers in Care of Mr Turner to Mr Millers Friend in South Australia the Russians then took complete control of the place & appointed a Captain of the Russian Gun Boat here as Military Governor - they have hauled down the Chinese Flag & hoisted the Russian [it] [was tell] I was informed a few days after taking charge they massacered about 1500 of the chinese inhabitence mostly woman & children they are in my
