FOREWORD

The class of 1942 publishes, for the first time in the history of Sterling High School, an annual.

This annual is the result of an endeavor to acquaint the reader with the community of Greenville, and Sterling High School as the nucleus.

Sterling High School is an accredited state high school in which the 671 students enrolled have a choice of electives in both the academic and vocational departments. Students are engaged in the study of English, French, social studies, sciences, home economics, masonry, carpentry, mechanical drawing, and the many extra features of the curriculum.

The following pages of "The Torch" show pictures of these activities.

The class of 1942 wishes to make grateful acknowledgment to Miss Margaret A. Sewell, head of the English Department, for valuable suggestions and guidance as to the arrangement and assimilation of material, to Professor H. S. Lawton for assistance with the advertisements, and to our principal, Mr. Beck, teachers, and students whose work and personality we have come in contact with during this term. We hold ourselves liable for any slips and infelicities that may mar the book.
