1985 KAMI MEGURO
TOKYO, JAPAN
March 25, 1931.
Dear Ducky:
Dr. Kagawa was here for two days and kindly wrote the inclosed. He is busy all over the country in the Kingdom of God Movement, and does not get to his little home in the suburbs of Tokyo very often. Miss Topping typed this letter as he dictated.
In January the Student Christian Movement of Great Britain brought out another of Kagawa's books, a brief one on "The Religion of Jesus", translated by Miss Topping. They have priced it at four shillings.
"Love the Law of Life" has sold fairly well. Recently the 1930 check for royalties came, amounting to nearly $600. Dr. Kagawa has just published a new novel, based on the life stories of two young Christians. It is published by the "magazine king" of Japan--Mr. Noma, who publishes more popular magazines than any other company in the world. Unfortunately, some of these magazines are not of the best quality. The new Kagawa novel is selling at present at the rate of 500 a day. The title is "A Grain of Wheat." It was written specially for the young people of rural Japan.
This year I have the mission secretary job, in addition to that of treasurer. So I am kept pretty closely at desk work. Next autumn, when the regular secretary is back again on the job, I hope to be out for more directly missionary work. However, we have ^to work out some matters of improvement in organization so as to secure better coordination of Japanese convention and the mission, to work out [crossed out], so I do not feel that time is being wasted at all.
Our boy, Linsley, will graduate from the American School this year, but may not return to America for college work till next year. He is nutty on bugs, e.e. keen student of entomology! Some of the Imperial Univ. men are very kind to him, taking him on trips with them to collect beetles.
We are always glad to hear from you. Edna joins in best wishes to you both.
As ever,
[Handwritten] Jimmy.
[Handwritten] "Ducky" was the nickname of "Uncle Johnny" Holmes while in Balto. City College.
"Jimmy" [?]essith was a fraternity brother at Johns Hopkins and a missionary in Japan
