HEADQUARTERS
UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY
WEST POINT, NEW YORK

April 29, 1931

Dear Charles:

I am sorry that I have been so tardy in sending you the pic-
tures of West Point. I had trouble getting one of General Lee
made and when it finally reached me I was preparing to leave for
Porto Rico so that I did not get time to write to you until I re-
turned. I am sending several pictures, probably many more than
you want, but you can select the ones most suited for your purpose.
I am also sending a large photograph of the old Chapel in its origi-
nal setting beside the Library. In 1911 it was removed, stone by
stone and re-erected in the Post Cemetery where it now stands and
is a sort of Shrine for the old graduates who return and who used
to attend Chapel Servces in it as caders. It is from this build-
ing that the ivy which I sent you was taken. General Winfield
Scott worshipped in this Chapel. General Robert E. Lee attended
services in it while he was Superintendent and all of the disting-
uished graduates of recent years including General Pershing have
attended Chapel in it. The old Chapel was originally built in 1937.

The portrait of General Lee hangs in the Cadet mess along
with the portraits of every other superintendent. It shows him as
a Colonel of Engineers, U.S. Army, which rank he held while Super-
intendent. General Lee was the ninth Superintendent of the Mili-
tary Academy, holding office from September 1, 1852 to March 31,
1855. He was a captain of Engineers when appointed, but the offie
of Superintendent carried with it the brevet rank of Colonel. The
portrait was paint[ed] by the well known artist Mr. [arrow and handwritten note with addition of, "Ernest'] Ipsen and is
taken from photographs of Gneral Lee [made] at that time.

I beleive I have given you enough data to correctly label
these pictures. Most of the postal cards have titles on them.

With love to all of the family, I am
Very truly yours,
