The Arlington Memorial Bridge.
The stone we have from the Arlington Memorial Bridge was kindly sent to us by our genial Congressman J. J. McSwain. The picture below shows the end of the bridge with the wonderful monument "Vision" a description of which is found below.
The Ericsson statue is also seen in this picture. John Ericsson was born in Sweden. He invented a self-acting gunlock by means of which naval cannon could be automatically discharged at any elevation without regard to the rolling of the ship. He designed a caloric engine and the screw propellor. He supplied engines and screw to the first steam vessel that crossed the Atlantic. He built the warship Princeton for U.S. the first ship to have her engines and boilers below waterline This was the foundation of steam marine of the world. His most famous achie-vement was the construciton on the Monitor of revolving turret fame.
