Andrew Jackson.
Andrew Jackson was born in Waxhaw settlement of South Carolina, Mar. 17th, 1767. He had little education but practiced law in Tennessee. He was a rugged soldier, self-confident, energetic, persistent. Hedefeated the British at the battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 and distinguished hiimself in Indian campaigns in Florida.
He became a popular hero and was elected president of the United States in 1828. The American school boy casts a halo of glory around the presidents and statesmen of our contry, but no position carries honor with it unless it is secured in an honorable way and unless conduct of the man in office is honorable. Appealing to the crowd, weather right or wrong, using public office for private or personal gain, bribery and other methods of politics are not honorable and presidents or councilmen who stoop to uch practices are dishonest, and dishonorable.
Andrew Jackson was a man of the frontier, loyal to friends and bitters toward his enemies, honest, and simple. Yet his approval of the spoils system whereby 2000 people were removed from office the first year of his administration to make room for his friends has, we think, done untold damage to our country and we to-day are still suffering from its curse. One man's acts may curse a nation for ages.
Yet Jackson was of heroic mould and will always appeal to the boys of the United States for that reason.
