NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
YELLOWSTONE PARK, WYO.

OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

December 3, 1929

Mr. John M. Holmes,
Y. M. C. A.,
Greenville, S. C.

Dear Mr. Holmes:

Hon. J. J. McSwain, of Greenville, South Carolina, wrote
us in August of your desire to secure a stone from Yellowstone
National Park for use in a rock lodge which you are building
for a boys' camp in the mountains of Greenville.

Due to the necessity for looking after the visitors in
the park during the summer season, we do not have time to col-
lect and ship specimens. However, after the season was over
a specimen of obsidian was collected and this is going forward
to you by express collect.

It is not known whether or not you have already completed
the lodge, but if not, we hope that the stone can be used. It
comes from Obsidian Mountain, located about twelve miles from
Mammoth Hot Springs on the road between Mammoth and Norris Junc-
tion. Obsidian Mountain is known as the "mountain of glass".
In the early history of the park the Indians used the obsidian
from this mountain for making their arrowheads.

Trusting that the specimen reaches you in time to be used
in the construction of the lodge, I am

Sincerely yours,

GIANT GEYSER : YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Of the 84 geysers in Yellowstone National Park, no two are alike in their characteristics.
The Constant Geyser sends forth graceful jets of water to a height of 20 feet once a minute.
Giant Geyser discharges only once in from five to seven days. Old Faithful, however, is so
regular that it might be called the clock of the subterranean world. In the 40-odd years
that it has been known to the white man it has never "missed fire" once, the interval being
65 minutes.
