Poinsett Bridge.

The handsome stone from Poinsett Bridge in the upper part of Greenville County was quarried and presented to this lodge by the Boy Scouts of Greenville. Mr. M. G. Boswell, the Scout Excutive for Greenville, formally presented the stone at a meeting of the Greenville Rotary and it was accepted by Mr. Brown Mahon, president of the Greenville "Y".

Just another bit of friendliness is expressed in this rock.

Joel R. Poinsett who built this bridge was an eminent South Carolinian. He was born in Charleston, March 2, 1779. He a member of Congress, minister to Mexico, Secretary of War, U.S. commissioner to South America for the purpose of investigating political conditions.

He introduced in this country a shrub which was named for him, the beautiful Poinsettia plant.

Many boys are under the impression that the South was unanimously in favor of secession whereas many strong leaders in the South were opposed to secession and nullification. Joel R. Poinsett was one of these.
