Rutherfordton, N.C.

Mr. Henry T. Mills, of Greenville, kindly gave us the interesting
piece of clear quartz from an old gold mine in Rutherfordton, N.C.
Gold is found in North and South Carolina although it is not success-
fully done [strikethrough, replaced with) mined (in ink) now. Years ago, the Government allowed individuals to make
five-dollar gold pieces provided the gold in the coin equalled five-
dollars in value. At that time the gold of North Carolina was made into
money at Charlotte. The coins are rare now but are known as the North-
Carolina Dollar in some places. There was a similar mine in Abbeville
S.C. Now the Government does allow anyone to coin money but the
Government itself.
