E X T R A C T

1.-- Awards of distinguished-service cross. - By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W. D., 1918), the distinguished-service cross was awarded by the commanding general, American Expeditionary Forces, for extraordinary heroism in action in Europe, to the following-named officers and enlisted men of the American Expeditionary Forces:

George Wells Batson, corporal, Company A, 118th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Bellicourt, France, September 26, 1918. With absolute disregard for his personal safety, he went 300 yards beyond the front line, in full view of the enemy and under heavy machine-gun fire, and brought back a wounded soldier.
