John Bunyan.
John Bunyan, the English preacher and author, was born of poor parents, in 1628. His father was a tinker and Bunyan took up that trade at which he was said to have been very proficient.
Bunyan attended a church in Bedford. He was always a good man but he worried a great deal about his sins until his doubts were driven away. In 1655 he began to preach and became a very effective speaker. When Charles II became king Bunyan was ordered to stop preaching but this he refused to do. He was thrown in jail where he remained about 12 years. While in prison Bunyan write "Pilgrim's Progress" a book which is still read the world over. It has been translated in 70 different languages. Every Christian boy should read it.
Bunyan said when sent to prison: "The parting with my wife and children hath been to me as the pulling of the flesh from my bones; and that not only because I am somewhat too fond of these great mercies, but also wants which my poor family is like to meet should I be taken from them. Especially my poor blind child, who lies nearer my heart than all I have besides: 0 the thought of the hardhships my blind one might go under would break my heart to pieces!"
We are fortunate in having in our walls a nail and a piece of the window glass from the John Bunyan cottage at Beford.
