THE SCENE OF THE AGONY ON THE SLOPES OF OLIVET-THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

The Garden of Gethsemane is now divided into two areas, one with its Russian Church with domes like upturned beets, and one with its new Franciscan basillica. Here Peter, James, and John fell asleep while their leader prayed, and Judas gave Jesus the kiss of betrayal.

EVERY VANTAGE POINT IS OCCUPIED DURING THE WASHING OF FEET: CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHER

Holy Week in Jerusalem begins on Maundy Thursday, when the feet of brilliantly robed priests, who impersonate the disciples, are washed by their religious leaders.

WHERE MOSLEM SOULS WILL BE WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE: DOME OF THE ROCK

These arches, which picturesquely frame the domes and minarets of Islam are called mawazin, or "scales," and it is here that Mohammedans believe that souls will be weighed on Judgement Day.

The Garden of Gethsemane.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, the night of the last Passover, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt." How wonderful it [written in margins]: would be if every boy who sees the sprig of olive and lavender from Geth -semane which we have in our walls would pray Jesus' prayer of con-secration.

Mrs. John M. Geer kindly gave this memento of Gethsemane to camp.

THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

From the days of Jesus, the slope facing Jerusalem across the Kidron Valley was called the Mount of Olives, and Gethsemane got its name from an oil-press. Bent, wrinkles olive tress in the Franciscan portion of the Garden are said to be those under which Jesus prayed. Their leaves are prized by pilgrims, their oil brings fabulous prices, and their seeds are made into rosaries.

WHERE JESUS, CLAD IN PURPLE AND CROWNED WITH THORNS, FACED HIS ACCUSERS

Above the Via Dolorosa (see Color Plate IV), near the traditional site of the Praetorium, curves the Ecce Homo arch, where Pilate said "Behold the man." This is the middle section of a triple arch, one of whose side arches, standing on a bit of Roman pavement, is now in the Church of the Sisters of Zion, on the right. One of the Bethlehem women here seen wears the high veiled tarboosh of the married woman (see also Color Plate I).

JUDGMENT PLACES, PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The minaret rises above the site of Pilate's Judgement Hall. Under the dome at the left, the Supreme Moslem Council pronounces judgement on contemporary policy. From the arcade in the foreground will be suspended the scales in which, according to Moslem faith, the souls of saints and sinners are to be weighed on Judgment Day.
