Barney, re: The surveying of lands on the Mountain, stating that the people in Winchester prefer to wait for definite plans of the location of the University before they incur expenses of surveying; stating further that they are willing to incur the expenses of cleaning out and putting in good order some of the principal Springs around Rowe's Cabin, and clearing the timber on some of the most prominent Bluffs so as to give good views into the valleys. 3pp.

1858, June 13 A. S. Colyar, At Home, to Col. Barney, re: Urging him to proceed with the surveying; saying that he will send up Mr. Logan and some hands to help. 1 p.

1858, July 20 John Murphy, Baltimore, Md. , to Col. Barney, re: Information concerning engraving or printing (maps?); suggesting that Col. Barney send them the report to print, promising to produce in a style worthy of the great enterprise; congratulating him on his appointment. 1 p.

1858, July 23 The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, Beersheba Springs, Tenn., to Col. Barney, re: Acknowledging receipt of letters; his instructions for Col. Gwynn to go to Sewanee to inspect the grounds and make suggestions as he may think advisable; discussion of the turnpike and railroad; Col. Armfield's desire to have Col. Gwynn spend some time with him; more discussions about the turnpike and the railroad which will reconcile the people to the Sewanee location; detailed remarks on how and where the roads must run, and the grading; his hope that the good people of the county will get up a picnic on a grand scale; the number of people who may attend. 12 pp.

Barney, re: The pledge of the people of Winchester to construct for the use of the University two turnpikes, one leading from Rowark's Cove and the other from Talley's Cove terminating on top of the Mountain; asking him, as Engineer to place himself in communication with the proper authorities and lay out and locate for the roads and to superintend the building of the roads - in the name of the Board of Trustees of the University. 1 p.

1858, Sept 12 Col. Barney, Cowan, Tenn., to J. Murphy and Co., re: a misunderstanding concerning Bishop Elliott's request to suspend the work on the plat, stating that since Bishop Elliott has not replied to letters on the subject, he would not send the proof to him, but would forward it to Bishop Polk instead; expression of satisfaction with the work. 2 pp.

1858, Sept. 18 W. Estill, Oakland Echo, to Col. Barney, re: Expenditures for surveys; stating that Mr. Colyar requests a bill of the whole expenditure so as to enable him to draw from each subscriber his pro rata. 2 pp.

1858 (?), Dec. 30 [in pencil: 1859, Jan. 12 and 1859, Jan 21] The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, New Orleans, La., to Col. Barney, re: Enclosure of a deed for his examination, asking him to forward it to Mr. Fogg in Nashville (deed from Tracy); requesting him to see that all the other deeds are made; the Univ. maps and their conclusion to order them from J. Murphy Co., an epidemic of yellow fever; his expectation of Bishop Elliott's visit in 15 days at which time they would work for the endowment for the Univ. 3 pp.
