According to the Bedford county, TN 1820 Census, there lived a person named Chunn, Lancelot. The 1830 Census is not available electronically yet (hopefully). Perhaps line 8 has the last name Chunn?

Camille Westmont

Good find! The only question is: is Lancelot Chunn black?
In looking more at this name, I think the first letter of the second name is an H. Compare it to the H in "Haywood" in line 6. Other than that, though, I still can't tell the rest of it.

I'm assuming Lancelot was white because he owned slaves. The census I found was for a decade before this convict was born, so it's possible that his parents were slaves of this owner and they took his last name when they were freed. The Census doesn't list every person in the family until the 1850 Census so I'll start from there next and work my way forward. Good catch on the H! Perhaps it is short for Humphrey?

Could the last name be Chinn? There was a lot of Chinese immigration in TN throughout the 1800s and that's kind of the way I am leaning, though I haven't been into the Bedford County censuses at all. Since we're looking at the 1880s, perhaps you might find a city directory (though heaven knows how helpful it would be if he's from the county), or plug his name into a newspaper database for 1882-3. He's listed as being 52 in this record - and black / colored - and he might have had a long and notorious (or meritorious!) career in that county. Also, I've found in my own work from this time that there are sometimes different connotations between black and colored. Colored could easily have encompassed Chinese men as well as black men and even some Native Americans, but black denoted individuals of African descent only.
