Your favour of the 5th inst inviting me to attend the "Ceremony of laying the Corner Stone of the Principal Building of the University of the South" has been received.

Thanking you for your polite invitation I regret to say: that it is absolutely impossible for me to be present, without neglecting very pressing and important duties. I am there fore compelled, (very reluctantly) to ask to be excused.
