Montgomery 20th Oct 1860

Dear Bishop,

It would have given me great pleasure to have been at the laying of the Corner Stone of the University of the South. I look upon it as great event, & one in which I feel more interest than I have been able to express by any act.

For the last six months my wife & I have been in daily & nightly attendance upon our sick mother, who still languishes.

Your letter was long after date, the post mark being of 29th Sept & only reached me on the evening of the 8th Inst -

not giving me time to answer it to the day expected. My wife unites with me in kind regards for Mrs. Otey & yourself & I desire to mark my regard by asking a special remembrance to her; & for yourself.
