I cannot accept your invi
tation to be present at the
laying of the corner stone of
what will be one of the
most useful educational
institutions of our country -

Having devoted many years
of my life to the work of instruct-
tion, my sympathies are strong-
ly enlisted in your behalf. Next
to religion, learning is the greatest
civilizer and the most efficient agen-
cy for the prevention of human
suffering.
